I like the reverse lunge because it pretty much eliminates any deceleration that a regular forward lunge creates. This type would be really ideal for someone that wants to avoid loading up the knee to much or just concentrate on more acceleration type work. When you add in the Val Slide, it changes the mechanics a little more and now to bring yourself to a standing position you really have to push through the heel and you can feel the hamstring/glute really extend. It is one of the top single leg variations out there. The Bulgarian bag is really comfortable and is an easy way to overload a bodyweight exercise.
